Vail Valley boasts world-class skiing in the winter and prime backcountry mountain and forest recreation opportunities in the summer. Vail is a gateway to the White River National Forest, which includes two wilderness areas and features an abundance of trails for hiking, mountain biking, camping, fishing and world-class golfing. Modeled after a European ski town, the streets in Vail Village are "pedestrian only," allowing easy access to fine shopping and gourmet dining. Nearby, Beaver Creek is home to the renowned Vilar Center for the Arts. The towns of Edwards, Minturn and Redcliff, also part of Vail Valley, are steeped in mining history.

Leadville is the highest incorporated city in the U.S., and one of the best-known preserved mining towns in Colorado. Colorado's highest peak, Mt. Elbert (14,440 feet), looms over the town whose summer festivals include Leadville Boom Days and the Leadville 100 Race. In Leadville, outdoor activities like mountain biking, fishing, four-wheel-drive trips, hiking and backpacking are plentiful. Visitors won't want to miss the Healy House Museum, Dexter Cabin, Matchless Mine and Silver Dollar Saloon.
